ELVIN BIRONIEN

Born in 1986 in the southwest of France, Elvin grew up in a family immersed in a wide variety of music. Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, Serge Gainsbourg, and Salif Keita, sparked his curiosity about the diversity of the world around him.

Initially introduced to piano and percussion, Elvin began teaching himself electric bass at the age of 13. He then developed a passion for Afro-descendant music, including jazz, salsa, reggae, soul, and zouk, while also maintaining an interest in 70s rock.

Coming from a mixed heritage family, Caribbean music, inherited from his maternal grandfather from Martinique, holds a special place in his artistic journey.

At 18, he moved to Toulouse, where he made a name for himself on the local scene by collaborating with various musicians. It was during this time that he formed the FDH Trio with pianist Thibaud Dufoy and drummer Arnaud Dolmen. Together, they recorded the album Le free du hazard in 2012, featuring prestigious guests such as Jacques Schwarz-Bart, Mino Cinelu, and Sonny Troupé.

In 2014, Elvin moved to Paris and recorded his first album as a bandleader, A QUEST, which was released in November 2016. At the same time, he gained recognition for his collaborations with artists like Nesrine, Gregory Privat, Kareen Guiock Thuram, and Mokhtar Samba, among others.

His second album, LUEURS (2022), was widely praised by critics and was featured in Jazzmag’s ‘Choc’ selections and Jazznews’ ‘Indispensable’ list. It was also named Album of the Day on TSF Jazz.

In 2024, he became an artist-in-residence at the Tropique Atrium National Stage in Martinique, where he created the Biguine Extension project in duo with guitarist Ralph Lavital, joined by percussionist Adriano Tenorio.
